NDMA Intensifies Flood Prevention Awareness in Western Freetown

By Mariama Bundu

The National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) has continued its flood prevention and disaster preparedness campaign in several communities across western Freetown as the rainy season intensifies.

The awareness exercise targeted residents of Funkia, Lumley, Metchem, and surrounding communities, with the aim of educating the public on measures to reduce flood risks and improve disaster preparedness.

The campaign was led by the Agency’s Deputy Director of Communications, Philomina Isatu Turay, and Gender Coordinator, Erica Konneh, who engaged residents through public sensitization and the dissemination of safety messages.

Speaking to residents and traders at Lumley Park and Lumley Market, Mrs. Turay urged communities to take responsibility for keeping their surroundings clean and drainage channels free from obstruction.

She emphasized that proper waste disposal and the prompt reporting of hazards can significantly reduce the risk of flooding and other disasters.

At Metchem Junction, Mrs. Konneh highlighted the importance of community participation in disaster prevention, stressing that women, men, young people, persons with disabilities, and community leaders all have a role to play in building resilient communities.

The engagement also provided an opportunity for residents to discuss disaster-related challenges affecting their communities and learn about practical ways to minimize risks during the rainy season.

The NDMA said it will continue to expand its public awareness campaign across the country to strengthen community preparedness and promote disaster risk reduction.
