UNDP Presents SGBV Assessment Report to Police Chief

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has presented an assessment report on Family Support Unit (FSU) service delivery and capacity gaps to Inspector General of Police, William Fayia Sellu.

The presentation took place in Freetown on 1 July 2026 under the European Union-funded Spotlight Initiative, which aims to strengthen access to justice for survivors of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV).

Presenting the report, UNDP Gender Analyst Kadiatu Bachalle Taylor said the initiative is being implemented in partnership with the Sierra Leone Police, the Judiciary, and the Ministry of Justice in Kailahun, Falaba, and Moyamba Districts.

She noted that the assessment identified staffing, logistical, and operational challenges affecting Family Support Unit services. She also disclosed that UNDP has procured motorcycles, laptops, printers, and other ICT equipment to support the work of FSU officers.

Taylor further revealed that efforts are underway to review the Unit’s Standard Operating Procedures to address emerging forms of gender-based violence, including technology-related offences.

Receiving the report, Inspector General Sellu thanked UNDP for its continued support and described the Family Support Unit as one of the most important departments within the Sierra Leone Police.

He assured the delegation that the recommendations contained in the report would be carefully considered and pledged support for their implementation.

The meeting ended with the formal presentation of the report, reaffirming the partnership between UNDP and the Sierra Leone Police in improving protection and access to justice for survivors of sexual and gender-based violence.
