Sierra Leone Celebrates Language and Cultural Exchange at 2026 Chinese Proficiency Competition

The Final of the 2026 Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreigners (Sierra Leone Qualifier) was successfully held at the Bintumani Hall two on Saturday, June 6, 2026, bringing together students, educators, government officials, diplomats, parents, and cultural enthusiasts in a vibrant celebration of language, culture, and friendship between Sierra Leone and China.

The event commenced with a warm welcome and introduction, setting the stage for an exciting programme of speeches and cultural performances.

Delivering the opening remarks, the Chinese Ambassador to Sierra Leone, Mr. Zhao Yong, reflected on the history and achievements of the Confucius Institute in Sierra Leone. He expressed delight at witnessing Sierra Leoneans speaking and greeting others in Chinese, noting that the growing interest in the language demonstrates the strong cultural ties and friendship between the two countries.

Speaking on behalf of the Ministry of Technical and Higher Education, Dr. Haja Ramatulai Wurie described the competition as a celebration of learning through expression. She noted that participants were not only demonstrating language proficiency but also showcasing culture through songs, dance, martial arts, drama, and other performances.

“The performances remind us that language moves beyond the classroom,” she said while commending teachers, parents, partners, and organizers for their continued support in nurturing students and promoting cultural exchange.

The Minister of Basic and Senior Secondary Education, Mr. Conrad Sackey, shared a thought provoking parable with the audience.

“A child who does not travel thinks only his mother cooks well,” he remarked.

He explained that exposure to different cultures broadens perspectives and deepens understanding, adding that the competition was a clear example of Sierra Leoneans embracing opportunities to learn from the wider world.

Also addressing the gathering was the Registrar of the University of Sierra Leone, Mr. Munda Lebbie, who highlighted the opportunities that collaboration with the Confucius Institute has created for students. He spoke about scholarships, educational exchanges, and the importance of language learning in preparing students for global citizenship and international engagement.

Mr. Lebbie congratulated all contestants for their dedication and commitment, noting that language serves as a bridge that connects people, cultures, and opportunities across the world.

The programme then moved into the competition segment, beginning with performances from primary school contestants.

Angie Kanu performed the song Ascending the Spring Peak.

Aminata Kargbo presented the dance Peach Blossom Smile.

Sophie Khoury performed the dance Wahaha.

Nancy Javombo showcased the martial arts presentation Xiang Wang Xing.

Gian Okyne performed the song Children’s Sky.

Emmanuel Sam presented a calligraphy performance titled A Visit to the Mountain Village.

Davida Kamara performed the dance Radiance.

Georgia Princess Ekua Johnson sang I Wanna Say Thank You.

Fodaeshia Haja Kadija Sillah performed a Chinese double flute piece titled Heart of a Dragon.

Abdallah Bah presented the dance Little Bistro.

Sahr Samuel Bandagba concluded the category with the martial arts performance Five Step Fist.

The University Group Competition followed with equally impressive displays of language proficiency and cultural understanding.

Emmanuel Femi Davies performed the song Chinese.

John Sah Foryoh sang Stranger in the North.

Blessing Claudia Ndanema presented the skit The Legend of the White Snake.

Fatmata Binta Barrie performed a Peking Opera piece titled The Escort of Su San.

Augustine Conteh presented the dubbing performance Joy of Life.

Charlesrita G. A. Bangura sang The Sea.

Mohamed Sitta Turay performed the Kuaiban presentation Count One.

Idrissa Fadika showcased the martial arts performance Martial Universe.

Adnan Kamara performed the songs Tomorrow Will Be Better and We Are the World.

Yusuf Sesay concluded the competition with the Kuaiban performance The Year of the Horse.

Following the competition, guests were treated to a special martial arts performance before the award ceremony, where outstanding contestants were recognized for their achievements.

The event concluded with a group photograph, bringing together participants, organizers, guests, teachers, parents, and supporters in celebration of a successful competition.

The 2026 Chinese Proficiency Competition once again highlighted the growing interest in Chinese language studies in Sierra Leone and demonstrated the power of cultural exchange in fostering mutual understanding, friendship, and global citizenship. Through language, performance, and shared experiences, the event served as a reminder that education extends beyond the classroom and opens doors to a world of opportunities.
