Maternal Health Advocacy Gains Momentum in Kono

By Mariama Bundu

Efforts to reduce maternal mortality in Sierra Leone are gaining ground, with renewed focus on midwifery and specialized healthcare services for mothers and newborns.

Isata Dumbuya, Director of RMNCAH at Partners In Health–Sierra Leone, highlighted ongoing interventions during a recent engagement, pointing to the establishment of a Maternal Center of Excellence in Kono as a key step toward improving maternal health outcomes.

She explained that the facility is equipped with modern medical infrastructure and skilled personnel to provide specialized care for mothers and newborns, while Koidu Government Hospital continues to manage broader medical cases.

Madam Dumbuya underscored the vital role of midwives in safeguarding maternal health, noting that although progress has been made globally in reducing maternal deaths, there is still a significant shortage of midwives, with an estimated one million more needed worldwide.

She encouraged young women to consider careers in midwifery and urged practicing professionals to uphold high standards in delivering quality care.

The initiative forms part of broader efforts to strengthen healthcare delivery and improve maternal and child health across the country.
