Minister of Social Welfare, Melrose Karminty, has reaffirmed Sierra Leone’s long-standing tradition of religious tolerance and peaceful coexistence between Christians and Muslims.

Speaking on the ongoing discussions surrounding religious regulations, the Minister dismissed claims that the Government has introduced a policy aimed at restricting religious preaching.

She clarified that consultations are currently underway to develop a framework to regulate the conduct of religious clerics, and not religious worship or preaching itself.

Minister Karminty assured the public that the consultation process is inclusive and being carried out across the country.

She further noted that any final policy recommendation would still require Cabinet approval before implementation.

She also announced a series of activities to mark the International Day of Families, aimed at promoting strong family systems as a way of addressing social challenges.

According to her, the activities will begin on Saturday, 16th May 2026, with an awareness march from Aberdeen to the SOS Children’s Village, where participants will sign a public commitment board in support of strong and functional families.

She further disclosed that a National Conference on the State of the Family will be held on Monday, 18th May 2026 at the Miatta Civic Centre.
