The Minister of Higher and Technical Education, Ramatulai Wurie, has reaffirmed government’s commitment to expanding access to technical and higher education across Sierra Leone, describing skills development as a key driver of national development.

Speaking at the Karene Civic Day Series on Tuesday, April 14, 2026, the Minister emphasized the importance of technical and vocational education in building a productive workforce.

She said the country cannot rely only on traditional professions such as law and medicine, stressing the need for skilled workers in areas like masonry, carpentry, catering, and other trades essential for national growth.

Dr. Wurie noted that since the establishment of the Ministry in 2018, efforts have been made to strengthen the sector, although progress requires continued investment and collaboration.

She announced plans to ensure that every district in Sierra Leone has a government technical institution, supported through partnerships for infrastructure development, equipment, and training.

She also revealed plans to transform existing technical institutions into community-based colleges tailored to local economic needs, particularly in agriculture and other district-specific industries.

The Minister further highlighted a demand-driven training approach that engages employers and industry stakeholders to identify workforce needs, ensuring graduates are better prepared for employment. She stressed that technical education is focused on hands-on, practical learning supported by industry placements.

On higher education, Dr. Wurie said the government is working to decentralize university education by upgrading regional campuses into fully-fledged universities.

She highlighted plans to establish the Tejan Kabba University in Port Loko District, with a focus on education, science, and technology.

She concluded that the government’s vision is to build an inclusive and responsive education system that equips young people with the skills needed to contribute meaningfully to national development.
