The Electricity Distribution and Supply Authority (EDSA) has launched a National Revenue Protection Taskforce to clamp down on illegal electricity connections and power theft across Sierra Leone.

The taskforce comprises EDSA staff and personnel from the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF), Sierra Leone Police (SLP) and the Office of National Security (ONS).
According to EDSA, the operation was initiated by the Government in response to growing revenue losses caused by illegal electricity activities, which have contributed to the Authority’s financial challenges and increased reliance on government subsidies.
The taskforce has been mandated to identify and address various forms of electricity theft, including meter bypassing, meter tampering, direct connections, unauthorised self-reconnection, billing irregularities and unsettled electricity bills.
EDSA warned that persons found engaging in illegal activities may face immediate disconnection, punitive surcharges, arrest and prosecution.
The Authority urged customers and the general public to comply with electricity regulations, noting that illegal connections and power theft affect the financial sustainability of EDSA, the quality and reliability of electricity supply, and the country’s socioeconomic development.
