The National Union of Civil Society Organizations/Activists Sierra Leone has called on the Government of Sierra Leone to urgently constitute and operationalize the Tobacco and Nicotine Control Council as provided for under the Tobacco and Nicotine Control Act 2022.

In a statement issued to mark World No Tobacco Day on 31st May 2026, the organization commended the government for enacting the Tobacco and Nicotine Control Act, describing it as a significant step towards regulating tobacco use, protecting non-smokers, and promoting public health.
The Union, which serves as the umbrella body for registered civil society organizations in Sierra Leone, noted that the establishment of the Tobacco and Nicotine Control Council is essential for the effective implementation and enforcement of the law.
According to the statement, the Council’s operationalization is not merely a legal requirement but a critical mechanism for coordinating national efforts to reduce tobacco use and address tobacco-related health challenges.
The organization expressed concern over the growing burden of tobacco-related illnesses on individuals, families, and the country’s healthcare system, emphasizing that the Council would strengthen efforts to prevent non-communicable diseases and protect future generations.
The Union also extended appreciation to its partners, including the World Health Organization, the African Tobacco Control Alliance, the Ministry of Health, and other civil society organizations for their continued support in tobacco control advocacy and public awareness campaigns.
The statement concluded with a renewed appeal to the government to constitute the Tobacco and Nicotine Control Council without further delay, describing the move as a demonstration of the government’s commitment to safeguarding the health and well-being of Sierra Leoneans.
The statement was signed by Amb. Mohamed Lamin Sheriff, National Secretary General of the National Union of Civil Society Organizations/Activists Sierra Leone.
