SLRU Constitution 2025 Officially Handed Over to Executive

Chairman of the Constitutional Review Committee of the Sierra Leone Reporters Union (SLRU), Ishmail Saidu Kanu Esq, has officially handed over the Union’s 2025 Constitution to President Yeanor Kabia and her executive.

The handover demonstrates a major milestone in the institutional strengthening of the Union after months of nationwide consultations, drafting, and thorough review by the Constitutional Review Committee. The completed document captures the collective aspirations of reporters across Sierra Leone, showing their desire for unity, improved welfare, and enhanced professionalism within the media.

The constitution was initially adopted during the maiden Annual General Meeting (AGM) of SLRU members. However, several amendments were proposed during the deliberations. These recommendations were meticulously reviewed, harmonized, and integrated by the Chairman and his committee before the final version was presented to the executive.

Speaking at the ceremony, Chairman Ishmail Saidu Kanu, Esq described the process as inclusive and transparent, stressing that the new constitution embodies the “true voice and interests of reporters in Sierra Leone.” He further noted that the successful completion of the document fulfils a key manifesto commitment made to Union members.

President Yeanor Kabia praised the committee for its dedication and professionalism, stating that the revised constitution will provide a strong framework for effective governance, accountability, and the protection of reporters’ rights and welfare.

The SLRU Constitution 2025 comprises fifteen comprehensive articles, addressing core areas such as the Union’s identity, aims and objectives, membership structure, executive governance, and electoral procedures. It also includes detailed provisions on regional coordination, disciplinary measures, financial management, amendments, and the establishment of standing committees.

Significantly, the constitution introduces robust guidelines on the Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct, as well as conflict-of-interest regulations, aimed at strengthening integrity and professionalism within the Union.

The executive has announced that the final document will soon be presented to the general membership at an official meeting for full dissemination and implementation.
