Youths Demand Climate Justice in Freetown

Young climate activists, students, journalists, and civil society organizations on Saturday joined the Global Climate Strike in Freetown to demand urgent climate action and accountability from major polluters.

The event was organized by Fridays for Future Sierra Leone in partnership with the Beckma Empowerment Initiative and other partners.

Participants included students from Grace International Secondary School and Lady Patricia Secondary School, young people from various organizations, and journalists from several television stations and online media platforms.

During the march, activists highlighted Sierra Leone’s vulnerability to climate change despite the country contributing less than three percent of global carbon emissions.

The protesters pointed to the increasing impact of droughts, flooding, heatwaves, mudslides, crop failures, and rising hunger affecting communities across Sierra Leone.

Organizers said the demonstration was more than a symbolic march, describing it as a direct call for climate justice and global accountability.

They urged fossil fuel companies and developed nations to take financial responsibility for climate-related loss and damage affecting countries in the Global South.

The activists also called for increased climate adaptation funding and stronger international support for vulnerable nations facing the growing effects of climate change.

The event formed part of the wider global movement advocating for sustainable environmental policies and urgent action to address the climate crisis.
