Sierra Leone Cricket Humiliated by Botswana and Cameroon in World Cup Qualifiers

Sierra Leone’s disappointing run in international cricket continued over the weekend after the national men’s cricket team, the “Patriot”, suffered two painful defeats at the ongoing ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Africa Sub Regional Qualifier A in Gaborone, Botswana.

On Saturday, 23rd May, the Patriots were heavily beaten by hosts Botswana in a match that exposed the growing struggles of Sierra Leone cricket on the international stage.

Batting first, Botswana posted an impressive 166 runs for 5 wickets in their allotted 20 overs, putting the Sierra Leone bowling attack under immense pressure throughout the innings. In reply, Sierra Leone failed to mount any serious challenge and finished on 96 runs for 7 wickets in 20 overs, handing Botswana a dominant 70 run victory.

The defeat was widely viewed by supporters and cricket stakeholders as a humiliating performance for a country that once competed strongly within African cricket.

However, matters became even worse on Sunday, 24th May, when Sierra Leone suffered a shocking one wicket defeat to Cameroon, marking the first time in history that Sierra Leone has lost to Cameroon in international cricket.

Sierra Leone endured a batting collapse after electing to bat first and were bowled out for just 64 runs in 12.1 overs. Cameroon, despite struggling during their chase, managed to reach 67 runs for the loss of 9 wickets in 15.4 overs to secure a historic victory.

The result has sent disappointment throughout the cricket family, especially considering the vast difference in cricket history and experience between the two nations.

Cameroon only made their international cricket debut in 2011 and is still regarded as an emerging cricket nation within Africa. Sierra Leone, by contrast, has been involved in international cricket for decades and was once considered one of the stronger associate cricket nations in the region.

For many followers of the game, losing to Cameroon represents another painful reminder of the dramatic decline of Sierra Leone cricket in recent years.

The latest defeats have once again intensified criticism of the leadership of Cricket Sierra Leone under Chairman Francis Trevor Samura, who has led the Association since 2021.

Since his leadership began, Sierra Leone cricket has experienced a steady decline across all categories. The senior men’s team, women’s national team, Under 19 boys, and Under 19 girls have all struggled badly on the international stage, with several teams suffering relegation from Division One to Division Two competitions.

Stakeholders argue that Sierra Leone cricket has now become a shadow of its former self, with emerging cricket nations increasingly finding it easy to defeat Sierra Leone.

Many critics continue to blame the decline on poor governance, internal divisions, weak administration, and the absence of meaningful cricket development structures across the country.

As the tournament in Botswana continues, pressure is mounting on cricket authorities and sports administrators to urgently address the worsening state of the game before Sierra Leone’s reputation suffers even further internationally.
