Over 500 Fires Recorded Since January 2025

By Mohamed Kamara

Over 500 fire incidents have been reported in Sierra Leone since January 2025, raising concerns about fire safety across the country, according to the National Fire Force.

In response, the NFF has established a new fire station in Magburaka, although it currently does not have a fire engine.

Legal Officer Bintu Fatmata Kamara Esq said the fire service is continuing public awareness campaigns to educate citizens on fire prevention.

She also mentioned the proposed Fire Safety Bill, which contains 58 sections developed through national consultations to strengthen fire safety measures.

Madam Bintu urged residents to remain vigilant, especially during the dry season, when the risk of fire outbreaks is higher, stressing that community cooperation and awareness are key to preventing further incidents.

Meanwhile, the National Youth Service (NYS) is expanding opportunities for young people.

Chairman Abdul Samad Kamara said the Service has trained seven batches of youth since 2018, and applications for Batch 8 are open until December.

He explained that the 2024 NYS Act now includes HND and HTC graduates, not just university degree holders.

With the support of Minister Ibrahim Sannoh, youth training hubs, known as “Youth Villages,” will be established in Mile 91, Kabala, Hanga, and Moyamba Junction to further equip young people with skills and opportunities.
