Opposition MPs Call for Release of JFK

The Supreme Court sent Lawyer Joseph Fitzgerald Kamara to prison last Thursday

The Opposition in the Parliament of Sierra Leone has called on the Supreme Court to reconsider the continued detention of former Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Joseph Fitzgerald Kamara, Esq., popularly known as JFK, and order his release.

In a press release dated 10 October 2026, the Opposition expressed concern over JF Kamara’s detention following an altercation with the Chief Justice during a Supreme Court hearing on the Constitution of Sierra Leone (Amendment) Bill 2025.

The Opposition urged the Court to consider the apology tendered by the lawyer, while acknowledging the authority of the judiciary and the need for legal practitioners to conduct themselves respectfully.

It also emphasised the importance of allowing lawyers to perform their professional duties independently and represent their clients firmly within the bounds of the law.

According to the statement, the matter should be resolved in a manner that preserves the dignity of the Court and allows attention to return to the substantive constitutional issues before the Supreme Court.

The Opposition also expressed solidarity with Kamara and his family, acknowledged calls from members of the legal profession for a reconsideration of his detention, and urged the public to remain calm and express concerns peacefully.

The statement was signed by Hon. Abdul Kargbo, Leader of the Opposition in Parliament, who reaffirmed the Opposition’s commitment to judicial independence, the rule of law and the protection of constitutional rights.
