NRA Warns Businesses to Issue GST Receipts

By Ishmail Saidu Kanu

The National Revenue Authority (NRA) has called on taxpayers across the country to remain compliant with key tax obligations as Sierra Leone enters the festive season.

In a public notice issued by the Public Affairs and Tax Education Unit, the Commissioner General extended warm season’s greetings and expressed appreciation to taxpayers for their support toward national development.

The Authority noted that revenue collected through taxes continues to fund essential services such as roads, hospitals, schools, and other public goods.

As business activities increase during the festive period, the NRA reminded all traders and businesses of three major compliance requirements.

First, all businesses must issue GST receipts using the Electronic Cash Register for every sale. The Authority has deployed mystery shoppers and supervisors to ensure strict adherence.

Second, traders dealing in excisable goods, including alcohol, soft drinks, tobacco, and bottled water, must ensure that all products carry the official Excise Stamp. The NRA warned that selling unstamped goods is illegal and may result in penalties or confiscation.

Finally, event organizers and entertainment promoters are required to register their events and pay the appropriate Goods and Services Tax on ticket sales.

The NRA will work with the Sierra Leone Police to enforce compliance during entertainment activities.

The Authority encouraged the public to celebrate responsibly while fulfilling their tax duties, adding that compliance helps strengthen the national economy.

The Commissioner General thanked taxpayers for their cooperation throughout the year and wished the country a peaceful and prosperous festive season.
