A Sierra Leone–China Parliamentary Friendship Group has been officially launched in Freetown to strengthen diplomatic and legislative cooperation between the two countries.

The launch took place during a dinner hosted by Chinese Ambassador to Sierra Leone, H.E. Zhao Yong, at the Chinese Embassy on Tuesday, 19th May 2026. The event brought together the Rt. Hon. Speaker of Parliament, Segepoh Solomon Thomas, parliamentary leaders, and Members of Parliament.

The group is intended to deepen cooperation between the legislatures of Sierra Leone and China, with a focus on promoting the One China Policy and enhancing parliamentary exchanges.

Ambassador Zhao Yong described the initiative as a major milestone in bilateral relations, noting the long-standing friendship between both countries. He commended the Speaker for his continuous support to China–Sierra Leone relations.

He recalled previous high-level visits between the two countries, including parliamentary exchanges and meetings with Chinese leadership, which he said have strengthened cooperation over the years.

In response, Speaker Segepoh Solomon Thomas reaffirmed Sierra Leone’s support for the One China Policy and welcomed the formation of the Friendship Group, saying it would promote stronger ties and mutual benefits for both countries.

The Speaker expressed optimism that the partnership would continue to grow as both nations mark 55 years of diplomatic relations in 2026.
