Mayor Chairs Global South at C40 Summit

By James Conteh

Mayor Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr represented Freetown at the C40 Cities World Mayors Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on November 3-4, 2025, serving as the Global South Co-Chair.

The two-day summit brought together over 300 mayors and approximately 2,000 participants each day to discuss climate action and sustainable urban development.

During the summit, mayors exchanged knowledge, shared technical climate data, and engaged with climate donors and partners, highlighting the pivotal role of cities in addressing climate change.

Mayor Aki-Sawyerr emphasized youth engagement in climate initiatives, noting that the Bloomberg Youth Climate Action Fund was inspired by her call to better support young people in the Global South.

The fund has supported over 100 municipalities globally, including 27 youth groups in Freetown, with grants ranging from $1,000 to $5,000, totaling nearly $130,000.

These grants have enabled young Freetonians to carry out projects such as mangrove restoration, solar light installations, disaster early warning apps, and local energy initiatives.

The summit was followed by the Local Climate Action Summit, an official COP30 event hosted by Bloomberg Philanthropies.

Mayor Aki-Sawyerr expressed optimism about new opportunities for collaboration and support to strengthen Freetown’s climate action efforts, noting that these initiatives contribute to the city’s ongoing Transform Freetown, Transform Lives agenda.
