Deputy Justice Minister Commends Chief Justice Kamanda

The Deputy Minister of Justice, Saptieu E. Saccoh, has commended Chief Justice Komba Kamanda for reforms aimed at improving access to justice across Sierra Leone.

Speaking at a post-conference event in Freetown on 3 October 2026, Saccoh said the reforms had made a significant impact on justice delivery, particularly through the expansion of judicial services to the provinces.

She highlighted the sitting of the Court of Appeal in the provinces as one of the key developments under the leadership of Chief Justice Kamanda.

According to Saccoh, senior judges have travelled from Freetown to provincial locations to hear appeals arising from those regions, helping to speed up the disposal of cases.

She was speaking on the theme, “AI, Justice and the Rule of Law,” where she also reaffirmed the Ministry of Justice’s commitment to working with relevant institutions to promote the responsible use of Artificial Intelligence in the justice sector.

Saccoh described the Chief Justice’s reforms as significant interventions, noting that they have been implemented in less than two years.

She also said Sierra Leone was recognised among the top-performing countries in the 2025 World Justice Rule of Law Index, which she associated with ongoing reforms in the justice sector.

The event was held at the NaTCA Tower, Southridge, and was attended by the Director-General of the National Communications Authority, the Solicitor-General Osman Kanu and Chief Justice Komba Kamanda, who delivered the keynote address.

The post-conference mixer was jointly organised by the Office of the Attorney-General and Ministry of Justice and the Ministry of Communications, Technology and Innovation, with support from UNESCO.

UNESCO Director for Inclusion, Policies and Digital Transformation, Guilherme Canela, said UNESCO is focused on training and supporting justice sector professionals in the responsible application of AI tools in courts and tribunals.
