Chief Justice Komba Kamanda Chairs ECOWAS Judicial Council Meeting in Freetown

Sierra Leone’s Chief Justice, Komba Kamanda, is chairing the first-ever meeting of the ECOWAS Judicial Council to be hosted in Sierra Leone, receiving commendations from fellow Chief Justices, eminent judges, and Commissioners of the ECOWAS Commission.

The high-level meeting, taking place at the Atlantic Hotel, commenced on 21 April 2026 and is scheduled to run through 24 April 2026.

In his opening remarks, Chief Justice Kamanda welcomed delegates and expressed appreciation for their presence at the statutory meeting, which was convened in accordance with Rule 6(1) and (2) of the Council’s Governing Rules. He emphasized the importance of the Council’s role in strengthening judicial independence and enhancing the quality of justice delivery across the sub-region.

The ECOWAS Judicial Council was established pursuant to Decision A/DEC.2/06/06, adopted by the Authority of Heads of State and Government. The decision formally integrated the Council into the ECOWAS institutional framework, marking a significant shift in the appointment of judges—from a largely political process to a more merit-based and peer-reviewed system.

Participants at the meeting commended Sierra Leone’s judiciary and the leadership of Chief Justice Kamanda for successfully hosting the important regional gathering, noting its significance in promoting collaboration among judicial leaders in West Africa.

The meeting is expected to deliberate on key judicial matters and further strengthen cooperation among ECOWAS member states in upholding the rule of law.
