Police, Communities Join Forces Against Crime

Chairmen of Local Police Partnership Boards (LPPBs) in the Western Area have pledged their support for reviving the Community Safety Volunteers (CSVs) initiative to strengthen crime prevention, improve intelligence-sharing and enhance public safety across Sierra Leone.

The commitment was made during a meeting with Inspector-General of Police (IGP) William Fayia Sellu on 23 October 2026. The delegation also congratulated him on his reappointment by President Julius Maada Bio.

Led by Mr Sao Lamin, the delegation included Murana Wai, Chairman of Kissy Division; Mahmoud R. Kabba, Chairman of Goodrich; and Simeon B. Sesay, Chairman of Congo Cross.

The chairmen reaffirmed their willingness to work with the Sierra Leone Police (SLP) to prevent crime, identify emerging security threats and promote peaceful communities.

They expressed concern over the declining effectiveness of the Community Safety Volunteers initiative in several communities and pledged to support efforts to revitalise it.

In response, IGP Sellu urged Local Unit Commanders and other police personnel to take greater responsibility for supporting the volunteers. He emphasised the need for stronger community engagement, reliable information-sharing and closer cooperation between residents and the Police.

The IGP also proposed elections for LPPB executives across all 39 police divisions nationwide to strengthen leadership, accountability and coordination.

He further expressed his readiness to engage the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to expedite the validation of the LPPB Constitution, which would provide a clearer framework for the boards’ operations and responsibilities.

IGP Sellu stressed that the recruitment and engagement of Community Safety Volunteers should be coordinated with LPPB leadership, urging the boards to remain active, accountable and responsive to the security needs of their communities.

The meeting highlighted the importance of community policing in preventing crime, strengthening public trust and improving cooperation between the Police and local communities.

The engagement concluded with the visiting chairmen presenting a picture frame to the IGP.
