Energy Minister, Cyril Grant
Sierra Leone’s Minister of Energy, Cyril Arnold Grant, has acknowledged ongoing electricity shortages affecting residents of Freetown, attributing the situation to reduced generation capacity caused by low water levels at the Bumbuna hydroelectric dam.

Speaking on the SLBC Morning Coffee programme, the minister expressed regret over the inconvenience faced by citizens, particularly in Eastern Freetown, where power cuts have been most severe. He apologized to affected communities and assured that efforts are underway to restore stable electricity supply.
He explained that maintenance work is currently being carried out on the Bumbuna facility and the 33kV transmission line, and said the electricity situation is expected to improve and stabilize by mid-June.
Mr. Grant also highlighted ongoing energy projects, including the Nant Power Project in Kissy and solar installations in Newton and Lungi, noting that these initiatives will strengthen power supply in the capital in the short and long term.
He added that reforms in the energy sector are ongoing as part of broader national development efforts, including the government’s Feed Salone agenda.
