The Judiciary of Sierra Leone is set to host the ECOWAS Judicial Council Meeting for the first time, bringing together top judges and judicial officials from across West Africa.

The five-day conference will take place from April 20 to 24, 2026, at the Atlantic Hotel in Lumley, Freetown. It will gather about 12 Chief Justices, 15 judges, and other senior judicial officials from ECOWAS member states.

The meeting will be held under the leadership of the Chief Justice of Sierra Leone, Komba Kamanda, who described the event as a major milestone for the country’s judiciary and for regional cooperation.

The ECOWAS Judicial Council serves as an important platform for strengthening judicial cooperation, promoting the rule of law, and improving justice systems across West Africa.

Chief Justice Kamanda said hosting the conference reflects Sierra Leone’s commitment to judicial independence, accountability, and collaboration among regional courts.

He added that discussions will focus on key issues affecting the judiciary, including judicial independence and emerging challenges in the administration of justice.

The Judiciary of Sierra Leone said it looks forward to welcoming delegates and supporting discussions that will help strengthen justice systems across the ECOWAS region.
