SLPP Chair Confirms Aki-Sawyerr Will Retain Mayoral Role Upon Return

By Mohamed Lamin Banya

The Chairman of the ruling Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP), Jimmy Batilo Songa, has confirmed that Freetown Mayor, Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr, will retain her mayoral position if she returns to the council, despite the recent appointment of an Acting Mayor.

Songa made this disclosure while speaking to journalists amid growing criticism over the appointment of an Acting Mayor for the Freetown Municipality.

According to him, SLPP councillors, within 24 hours, unanimously selected one of their members to serve as Acting Mayor following the suspension of governmental activities by Mayor Aki-Sawyerr and councillors of the main opposition All People’s Congress (APC). The suspension came after the approval of the country’s new Electoral Commission leadership.

Songa explained that Section 13 of the Constitution provides guidance on how citizens and institutions should respond in such circumstances. He stressed that the SLPP is not contesting the legitimacy of Mayor Aki-Sawyerr’s mandate, but acted to ensure continuity in governance during her absence.

He noted that the decision to appoint an Acting Mayor was informed by concerns raised by SLPP councillors, including pressing challenges such as the recent discovery of lifeless bodies within the municipality.

“In total, there are 40 councillors in the Freetown Municipality representing both parties. The APC has the majority, while we are in the minority,” Songa stated.

“They have chosen not to participate in governance, but as the ruling party, we cannot sit idly by and allow a leadership vacuum, especially in the mayoral office, which is critical to the city’s development,” he emphasized.

Songa further clarified that Mayor Aki-Sawyerr has not been removed from office, dismissing claims suggesting otherwise.

“The Mayor remains in office. No one is contesting that. However, we must ensure that the council continues to function effectively,” he said.

He added that the party’s decision was aimed at preventing the municipality from being held to ransom due to the absence of active leadership.

Songa also revealed that he intends to engage Mayor Aki-Sawyerr in dialogue, noting that they have previously maintained a working relationship.

“I will reach out to her. Over time, we have always collaborated, even during my time at NaCCSA,” he added.

He concluded by urging Mayor Aki-Sawyerr to reconsider her decision and prioritize her commitment to the development of Freetown.
