The Minister of Sports, Madam Augusta James-Teima, has described the election of Solomon Kargbo as President of African Boxing as a historic milestone and a moment of immense pride for Sierra Leone.

Speaking during a courtesy visit by the Sierra Leone Boxing Association at the Ministry of Sports, Minister James-Teima said she was deeply moved by the achievement, noting that it is the first time in the history of sports that Sierra Leone has produced a continental president for Africa.

“For me, today is a very special moment. I am genuinely happy and proud,” the Minister said, emphasizing that the achievement reflects years of dedication, credibility, and hard work within the sport of boxing.

She congratulated Mr. Kargbo on behalf of the Ministry of Sports, praising his over forty years of service to boxing and expressing confidence in his ability to represent both Sierra Leone and the African continent with distinction. According to the Minister, the confidence shown by African countries in electing him speaks volumes about his leadership and commitment to the sport.

Madam James-Teima also stressed the importance of unity within the Sierra Leone Boxing Association, describing unity as the foundation for progress. She urged officials and stakeholders to give their full support to the newly elected continental president, warning that greater responsibility now rests on the association.

“Now that you have a continental president, much is expected. We do not want to hear negative reports about boxing from Sierra Leone,” she cautioned, calling for respect, discipline, passion, and teamwork.

The Minister assured the association that His Excellency President Julius Maada Bio would be formally informed of the achievement, adding that the President places high value on sports and does not overlook any sector in governance.

She reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to supporting boxing despite existing operational challenges, noting that progress in boxing should serve as an example for other sporting disciplines in the country.

Madam James-Teima concluded by calling on all stakeholders to remain focused, committed, and God-fearing, adding that sports play a vital role in national development.

“You have made us proud today,” she said. “Let us continue to work together to push sports forward and make Sierra Leone a better place.”

She ended by once again congratulating Mr. Kargbo and the boxing fraternity, wishing them continued success at the continental level.
