Ahmed Sahid Nasralla Elected FAJ Climate Chief

Journalist leaders from across Africa have come together to forge shared continental priorities for climate justice reporting and information integrity. The three-day workshop, organized by the Federation of African

Journalists (FAJ) from December 18 to 20, 2025, focused on strengthening journalists’ capacity to report on just transition and promote informed public participation.

The workshop, held under the theme “Strengthening the Capacity of Journalists and Their Unions for the Effective Realisation of Just Transition in Africa,” brought together senior journalists and union representatives from across the continent, with support from Mondiaal FNV.

Participants examined the impact of climate change on jobs, livelihoods, food security, and public health, highlighting the importance of clear and accurate journalism in holding governments and institutions accountable. Sessions also explored the role of trade unions in supporting decent work and inclusive climate action.

FAJ President Omar Faruk Osman emphasized that journalists are active participants in shaping public understanding of climate issues. He noted, “Preserving information integrity is essential, because without accuracy and credibility, both quality journalism and effective climate action are undermined.”

The workshop included virtual addresses from UN officials, including Melissa Fleming, Under-Secretary-General for Global Communications, who stressed the need for solutions-oriented journalism to counter misinformation and support public trust.

Participants also discussed the rising safety risks journalists face while covering climate issues, including harassment and legal pressure, and stressed the need to protect reporters to maintain independent reporting.

On the final day, attendees adopted the Nairobi Declaration, affirming FAJ’s commitment to climate justice, just transitions, and safeguarding information integrity. Following the workshop, the FAJ Climate Justice Working Group met to plan activities for the next year, electing Ahmed Sahid Nasralla, former SLAJ President, as its new head.

FAJ reaffirmed its dedication to supporting fair, reliable climate journalism across Africa and collaborating with partners, including the UN and African Union, to promote inclusive climate action for vulnerable communities.
