President Julius Maada Bio on Monday welcomed the Secretary-General of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), Wamkele Mene, during his official visit to Sierra Leone for the launch of the country’s AfCFTA Readiness Assessment Report and Updated National Trade Strategy (2024–2030).
The Minister of Trade and Industry, Ibrahim Alpha Sesay, praised President Bio’s leadership and confirmed that Sierra Leone is the first African country to complete and gazette its AfCFTA Readiness Assessment. He highlighted the country’s commitment to empowering women and youth, supporting the private sector, and promoting regional trade.
AfCFTA Secretary-General Mene applauded Sierra Leone’s progress, describing it as a model for trade readiness and reform. He emphasized the importance of political will and private sector involvement in unlocking Africa’s $3.4 trillion market.
President Bio reaffirmed Sierra Leone’s dedication to regional trade, stating that the AfCFTA offers a pathway to sustainable growth, job creation, and prosperity. He called on local businesses and youth to take advantage of opportunities in manufacturing, digital trade, and other sectors.
The launch of the Readiness Assessment Report marks a major step in Sierra Leone’s journey toward deeper integration with the African continent through trade and investment.
