UTB Owner Sanpha Koroma Dies

Dr. J. Sanpha Koroma, one of Sierra Leone’s most influential figures in finance, governance, and academia, has passed away at the age of 79.

His death, which occurred in the early hours of Sunday, has sent shockwaves across the country, prompting an outpouring of tributes from national leaders, business figures, and ordinary Sierra Leoneans.

The family of Dr. Sanpha confirmed the news, describing his passing as “sudden” and asking for privacy during this period of mourning.

A titan in Sierra Leone’s financial sector, Dr. Sanpha is best known as the founder and executive leader of Union Trust Bank (UTB), the first and only wholly indigenous private commercial bank in Sierra Leone.

Since its establishment in 1995, UTB has expanded to over 11 branches across the country, employing more than 300 Sierra Leoneans and offering vital financial services, including microfinance, to underserved communities.

His visionary leadership in founding UTB is widely credited with boosting national confidence in homegrown financial institutions.

Dr. Sanpha Koroma’s impact extended far beyond the banking world. He served as Governor of the Bank of Sierra Leone under President Ahmad Tejan Kabbah, where he oversaw monetary policy during a critical post-conflict reconstruction period.

Later, under President Ernest Bai Koroma, he served as Secretary to the President and Economic Adviser, playing a key role in national development planning and public sector reform.

His contributions to academia were equally significant. As Chancellor of the University of Sierra Leone, Dr. Sanpha Koroma championed higher education reform and invested in leadership development for young Sierra Leoneans.

He was also a major shareholder in Rokel Commercial Bank, further underscoring his commitment to strengthening the country’s financial sector.

Across his many roles, whether in government, finance, or education. Dr. Sanpha was known for his integrity, foresight, and steadfast belief in Sierra Leone’s potential.

“Dr. J. Sanpha Koroma was more than a banker; he was a nation-builder. His legacy will live on in the institutions he built and the lives he touched,” said one former colleague

Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the family in the coming days. He is survived by his wife, children, and grandchildren.

Thoughts and prayers continue to pour in from across the country and the diaspora as Sierra Leone mourns the loss of a true pioneer.
