The Law Reform Commission (LRC) has begun nationwide consultations on reviewing the Matrimonial Causes Act, Cap 102 of the Laws of Sierra Leone, 1960. The first session took place at Albertson Hall in Kenema.

The consultations aim to gather the views and recommendations of Sierra Leoneans to update matrimonial laws so they better reflect the country’s current social realities and needs.

At the opening, Paramount Chief Sadu M. Kapuwa Matoe IV and Kenema City’s representative, Hon. Francis Amara Konuwa, welcomed the Commission and emphasized the importance of the review for all citizens.
Brima Koroma Esq., chairman of the session, explained the benefits of reforming the law. Members of the Sub-Committee presented their recommendations, focusing on Section 5 of the Act, which currently allows divorce only on grounds of adultery, abandonment for nearly three years, or cruelty.

Many have found these limited grounds make it difficult to seek relief from the courts. The Commission hopes the review will create a fairer legal framework that protects spouses’ rights while respecting the sanctity of marriage.
Participants divided into groups to discuss the recommendations and shared their opinions before the session ended with praise for the Sub-Committee’s work. The consultations will continue across the country.
