AfBA Hails Bio’s ECOWAS Leadership

The African Bar Association (AfBA) has commended Sierra Leone’s President Julius Maada Bio, Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), for his leadership in guiding the regional bloc during a period of heightened political tension.

In a letter signed by its President, High Chief Ibrahim Eddie Mark, the association applauded President Bio’s commitment to dialogue and reconciliation as Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso — all currently under military rule — advance plans to withdraw from ECOWAS and consolidate ties under the Alliance of Sahel States (AES).

AfBA warned that the exit of the three countries could jeopardize decades of progress in regional unity, economic integration, and security if not handled carefully. It urged President Bio to prioritize negotiation over punitive measures, noting that sanctions often worsen hardship for citizens and deepen divisions.

“We cannot condone military takeovers; however, punishing the people of these countries with blanket sanctions only deepens the divide and worsens insecurity,” the association stressed.

While reaffirming its opposition to unconstitutional changes of government, AfBA emphasized the need for inclusive dialogue to resolve the crisis. It pledged to support ECOWAS under Bio’s leadership through mediation efforts, legal expertise, and advisory backing to strengthen governance and the rule of law in the region.

The association’s statement reflects growing recognition that constructive engagement, rather than isolation, will be critical in bridging divides and maintaining regional stability
