The Media Freedom Coalition has called for stronger protection of journalists working in conflict zones, as the world marks this year’s World Press Freedom Day under the theme “Shaping a Future at Peace.” In a statement, the coalition, which includes 46 countries such as Sierra Leone, said a free and independent media is essential for peace, security,
and accountability. It noted that journalists play a key role in exposing war crimes, countering misinformation, and promoting dialogue during times of conflict.
However, the coalition warned that threats against journalists are rising sharply. It cited figures from the Committee to Protect Journalists showing that 129 media workers were killed in 2025, making it the deadliest year on record in more than three decades.
The statement also highlighted growing risks beyond physical attacks, including online harassment, censorship, financial pressure, and challenges linked to artificial intelligence.
The coalition urged governments to protect journalists, uphold press freedom, and end impunity for crimes against media workers. It stressed that supporting a free press is vital not only for democracy but also for building lasting peace.
