The Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ) marked International Women’s Day 2026 by celebrating the achievements and resilience of women and girls across Sierra Leone, while highlighting the need for continued action on gender equality.

In a statement, SLAJ President Alhaji Manika Kamara said this year’s global theme, “Rights. Justice. Action. For ALL Women and Girls,” underscores ongoing challenges women face in leadership, economic participation, access to justice, and decision-making.

He stressed that women are central to Sierra Leone’s communities, economy, and democracy, yet structural barriers still limit their full potential.

President Manika highlighted SLAJ’s efforts to promote gender equality in the media, including the launch of Sierra Leone’s first Gender Equality Policy for journalists, training for women in Public Financial Management reporting, and digital media literacy programs.

He also noted initiatives to increase women’s leadership within SLAJ and in partnership with Women in the Media Sierra Leone (WIMSAL).

The SLAJ President urged journalists to use their platforms to amplify women’s voices, challenge stereotypes, and highlight issues affecting women, particularly in rural and marginalized communities.

He concluded by calling for renewed commitment to empowering women, emphasizing that national development depends on ensuring women have equal opportunities to learn, lead, and contribute.

SLAJ paid tribute to all women journalists in Sierra Leone for their professionalism, courage, and contributions to a stronger media sector and democracy.
