Street Child of Sierra Leone has disbursed over NLe 6.5 million to 3,606 caregivers across the country in a major effort to strengthen household resilience and support children’s education.

The official distribution ceremony took place on Friday, 27 March 2026, at Boxton Hall, Charles Street, Freetown, bringing together beneficiaries and stakeholders from across the country.

According to the Country Director, Kelfa Karbgo, more than 80 percent of the beneficiaries are women, including widows and single mothers, highlighting its continued focus on supporting vulnerable families.

The initiative covers 10 districts: Kenema, Kailahun, Port Loko, Kambia, Western Area Urban and Rural, Tonkolili, Koinadugu, Falaba, and Bombali.

Speaking during the event, representatives of Street Child emphasized that the grants are designed to help caregivers start or expand small-scale businesses, enabling them to generate sustainable income to support their children’s education and overall wellbeing.

Prior to receiving the funds, beneficiaries participated in training sessions focused on basic business management and financial literacy to ensure effective use of the grants.

The organization also announced plans for ongoing weekly monitoring and mentoring to support beneficiaries in addressing business challenges.

In addition, caregivers who consistently participate in Street Child’s weekly savings scheme will qualify for a “matching grant” in the coming months, further boosting their capacity to grow their businesses and strengthen household stability.

Kelfa Karbgo noted that empowering caregivers remains central to its mission, stressing that when families are economically stable, children are more likely to stay safe, remain in school, and achieve better learning outcomes. The organization reaffirmed its commitment to working in hard-to-reach communities across Sierra Leone, ensuring that vulnerable children are protected and given the opportunity to build a brighter future
