Stats SL Begins Census Mapping

Statistics Sierra Leone (Stats SL) has officially begun a nationwide cartographic mapping exercise in preparation for the 2026 Population and Housing Census (PHC ’26). This critical phase aims to ensure an accurate and comprehensive count of the country’s population and households.

The announcement was made by the Statistician-General and Chief Census Officer, Mr. Andrew Bob Johnny, who emphasized the importance of the mapping process for a credible census. Supported technically by GIS and Cartographic Mapping Consultant Dr. Foluke Adebayo, the exercise involves identifying and marking enumeration areas and systematically numbering all localities and physical structures across Sierra Leone.

“Mapping is a crucial step in the census process. It allows us to plan effectively, allocate resources equitably, and ensure that no one is left behind,” said Mr. Johnny. He explained that the success of the entire 2026 Census depends on the accuracy of this foundational exercise.

From October 2025 through to next year, trained field teams will visit both urban and rural communities nationwide. The teams will be clearly identified with official Census ID cards, branded T-shirts, caps, and will use digital tablets for data collection.

Stats SL is appealing to residents, community leaders, traditional authorities, and local government officials to provide full cooperation and support to the mapping teams.

“This exercise relies on the cooperation of every Sierra Leonean,” Mr. Johnny added. “Your support is vital to producing reliable data that will guide national planning, inform policies, improve service delivery, and ensure equitable resource distribution.”

The 2026 Population and Housing Census is more than just data collection; it is a key tool for national development. Accurate census data will support informed decisions in education, health, infrastructure, social protection, and other sectors.

Stats SL encourages all citizens to welcome the mapping teams and help make this important national exercise a success.
