The Speaker of Parliament, Honourable Segepoh Solomon Thomas, has urged Members of Parliament (MPs) to put Sierra Leone first and fully utilize constitutional provisions in carrying out their duties.

Speaking during the first parliamentary sitting after a prolonged recess on Tuesday, 24th March 2026, the Speaker emphasized the importance of Section 97 of the Constitution and the Standing Orders as key tools for effective legislative work.

He reminded MPs that their primary responsibility is to serve the people of Sierra Leone, stressing that national interest must take precedence over political affiliations.

“This is your House. You are here to serve the people of Sierra Leone,” the Speaker said.

Explaining the reason for the extended break, he noted that it allowed MPs to observe the holiday period and also participate in political activities in their constituencies without disruption.

With Parliament now reconvened, the Speaker announced that sittings would increase to address pending national issues, noting that meetings would continue frequently.

“We have a lot to do. Beginning tomorrow, we will be meeting frequently,” he stated.

Honourable Segepoh also called on MPs to attend sittings regularly and actively participate in debates, cautioning against absenteeism.

“There are many ways to engage government, but absence from sittings should not be one of them,” he warned.

The Speaker further disclosed plans to meet with parliamentary leaders to discuss key issues affecting the institution, describing his remarks as a call for discipline and commitment among lawmakers.

He concluded by encouraging MPs to make full use of constitutional provisions to enhance their effectiveness in Parliament.
