Sierra Leone Parliament Wins CSPOC Seat

The Parliament of Sierra Leone has been elected to serve as West Africa’s representative on the Standing Committee of the Conference of Speakers and Presiding Officers of the Commonwealth (CSPOC) for the period 2026–2028.

The historic election took place during the 28th CSPOC Conference held in New Delhi, India, from January 14 to 17, which brought together 61 Speakers and Presiding Officers from 42 Commonwealth countries.

The conference focused on strengthening democratic institutions, modernizing parliamentary practices, and promoting citizen engagement.

Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Segepoh Solomon Thomas, will represent West Africa at the next Steering Committee meeting in Barbados in August 2026.

Leading the Sierra Leone delegation at the conference was Hon. Daniel Brima Koroma, Deputy Leader of the Opposition, alongside Gilbert Bosco N’habay, Deputy Clerk of Parliament, and Hon. Fatmata Bintu Bockarie, Deputy Chair of the Mines Committee.

The delegation also held a private meeting with the Speaker of the Indian Parliament to discuss the establishment of a Sierra Leone-India Parliamentary Friendship Group and the urgent need for a Sierra Leonean embassy in India.

The CSPOC, established in 1969, provides a platform for Speakers and Presiding Officers to share best practices and strengthen parliamentary democracy.

Sierra Leone’s election reflects its growing influence in regional and international parliamentary affairs and its commitment to promoting transparency, inclusivity, and accountability in governance.

This achievement positions Sierra Leone to contribute meaningfully to shaping Commonwealth parliamentary practices and reinforcing democratic values across member states.
