The Eastern Regional Team of the Sierra Leone Water Company (SALWACO) has launched efforts to curb illegal activities in water catchment areas in Kenema.

Stakeholders engaged include the Sierra Leone Police Regional Headquarters, the Resident Minister for the East, and local community leaders.
SALWACO officials, including Regional Manager Braima Allieu and Director of Communication, Mary Mansaray Ngegba, raised concerns about illegal gold and stone mining, timber logging, deforestation, and charcoal burning at the Kamboi Hills dams.
These activities threaten water quality, including at the Nyandeyama New England Dam, which serves government offices, the correctional center, the fisheries market, and residential areas.
AIG Meinday, Regional Police Commander, pledged full support for SALWACO and emphasized that the police, who also rely on the dam for water, will take action against those destroying the catchment areas.
He tasked the Regional OSD Commander with coordinating raids and arrests against violators.
SALWACO reaffirmed its commitment to working with authorities to minimize illegal activities and safeguard clean, safe drinking water for the district.
