Review of Ombudsman Act 1997 Underway

The Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Alpha Sesay, has met with the newly appointed Ombudsman, Emmanuel Tondoneh Esq., to strengthen coordination in Sierra Leone’s justice sector and improve access to fair and efficient remedies for citizens.

The meeting, held at the Guma Building in Freetown, focused on enhancing the role of the Office of the Ombudsman as a key part of ongoing justice sector reforms.

Attorney General Sesay emphasized the importance of the Ombudsman’s office in handling cases of maladministration and citizen complaints against public authorities. He noted that efforts are underway to review the Ombudsman Act of 1997 to modernize the legal framework and align it with international standards.

“Our goal is to make the Ombudsman’s office an effective and reliable mechanism for addressing grievances and safeguarding citizens’ rights,” Sesay stated.

In response, Ombudsman Tondoneh thanked the Attorney General for his support and pledged to build a transparent, accountable, and responsive institution. He also committed to working closely with stakeholders to strengthen public trust in the Ombudsman’s work.

The engagement is seen as a key step in reinforcing justice sector reforms, with the Office of the Ombudsman playing a central role in promoting accountability and access to justice in Sierra Leone.
