Sierra Leone is participating in the Regional Conference on Information Integrity in West Africa and the Sahel, which opened today in Praia, Cabo Verde. The conference runs from September 3 to 5, bringing together over 150 delegates, including regional leaders, policymakers, civil society, and international partners.
The opening ceremony was held at the National Assembly Hall and featured keynote speeches from high-level officials such as Dr. Lourenço Lopes, Assistant Secretary of State to the Prime Minister of Cabo Verde; Dr. Ismaila Ceesay, Minister of Information of The Gambia; and Patricia Portela de Souza, UN Resident Coordinator in Cabo Verde.
Representing Sierra Leone, Emmanuel Abubakar Benoni Turay, Acting Director of Government Information Services, delivered remarks highlighting the importance of nurturing trust and safeguarding information integrity during conflict, crisis, and elections. The Sierra Leone delegation also includes Dr. Ibrahim Sega Shaw, Chairman of the Right to Access Information Commission.
The conference focuses on addressing challenges related to disinformation, hate speech, and information manipulation, aiming to develop a harmonized regional framework based on human rights and transparency. Panels and breakout sessions cover emerging technologies, media literacy, regulatory innovation, and social cohesion.
The Ministry of Information and Civic Education commended the Government of Cabo Verde, UNESCO, ECOWAS, and partners for organizing the event and reaffirmed Sierra Leone’s commitment to promoting information integrity in the region.
