Opposition Concerns Taken Seriously

The Rt. Hon. Speaker of Parliament, Segepoh Solomon Thomas, on Wednesday, convened a meeting with the leadership of the parliamentary opposition with the express objective of facilitating their renewed participation in legislative proceedings.
Leader of the Opposition, Hon. Abdul Kargbo, articulated that the opposition’s abstention from parliamentary sittings was predicated upon the recent appointment of Edmond Alpha as Chief Electoral Commissioner, expressing the view that Mr. Alpha should not oversee the conduct of the 2028 national elections.
The Speaker duly considered the concerns raised and, in accordance with the constitutional mandate of Parliament as an independent legislative organ, urged the opposition to set aside partisan considerations and resume engagement in parliamentary affairs.
He underscored the critical importance of continued representation of constituents and stressed that several constitutional amendments are pending before Parliament, necessitating bipartisan deliberation and action.
In closing, the Rt. Hon. Speaker extended his appreciation to the opposition leaders for honouring the invitation and committed to transmitting the outcomes of the dialogue to His Excellency, President Julius Maada Bio, to ensure a coordinated approach to resolving the prevailing governance impasse.
