The National Task Force on Drugs and Substance Abuse has reported significant progress in Sierra Leone’s campaign against Kush, according to Brig. Prof. Foday Sahr, Executive Director of the National Public Health Agency.

Since its establishment, the Task Force has treated over 6,000 patients at Kissy Psychiatric Hospital, including more than 2,300 drug-related cases, and trained 1,400 health workers.

Three rehabilitation centers have been set up in Hastings, Gondama, and Daru, with another planned for Bombali. Over 4,000 individuals have been rehabilitated and reintegrated as community ambassadors, and more than 1,000 youths trained as peer educators.

Prevention campaigns led by the Ministry of Information included media outreach, jingles, and public engagements, while local government authorities trained over 1,000 community champions and held more than 30 community dialogues.

Law enforcement efforts included 90 hotspot raids in the past week, resulting in arrests and drug seizures. Citizens were urged to report drug-related incidents via toll-free lines 900 and 117.

The Special Security Unit, officially established on November 1, 2025, with over 200 personnel, conducted operations across 90 communities, making 46 arrests and seizing over 3,000 wraps of Kush, 63 wraps of hash, and large quantities of tramadol.

Community engagement continues to be a priority, with outreach programs conducted in Waterloo, Hamilton, Wilberforce, Murray Town, and other districts, focusing on prevention and public awareness.

Dr. Carol Labor, Senior Adviser at the National Public Health Agency, emphasized that addiction is a mental health issue and called for comprehensive societal approaches, including early treatment, community interventions, and addressing root causes.

The Task Force continues to combine law enforcement, rehabilitation, and community engagement to curb drug abuse and support affected individuals across Sierra Leone.
