
Milton Margai Technical University (MMTU) has issued a detailed response to claims of recruitment malpractice during its transition from a polytechnic to a university. Associate Professor Philip John Kanu, Vice Chancellor, denied allegations that he manipulated the recruitment process, describing them as “baseless and misleading.”
The university explained that all recruitment procedures followed the Universities Act 2021 and were overseen by the University Court, the institution’s highest decision-making body. Staff were required to reapply for positions to align their qualifications with university standards, a national directive applied to all transitioning institutions.
Contrary to claims of secret interviews or harassment, MMTU stated that panels, including professors from other universities, retired academics, TEC representatives, and external observers, conducted interviews publicly. The university emphasized that no provisional employment letters were issued outside official procedures.
Dr. Kanu also clarified that ministerial instructions were fully observed, salary payments were processed through official government channels, and ongoing challenges, such as rent allowance backlogs, predate his administration. The university highlighted its achievements under Dr. Kanu’s leadership, including new infrastructure, strengthened academic systems, and improved staff welfare.
MMTU urged the public to rely on verified facts, stating that the institution continues to operate transparently and in compliance with national standards. Dr. Kanu reaffirmed his commitment to fairness, due process, and the continued growth of the university.
