The Catholic Diocese of Kenema and the broader Sierra Leonean community are reeling in shock and grief following the brutal killing of Rev. Fr. Augustine Amadu, Parish Priest of the Immaculate Conception Parish, Kenema.

Fr. Amadu was murdered in the early hours of Sunday morning, between 2:00 and 3:00am, at his residence in the Burma 3 community, reportedly by armed robbers who forcefully entered his compound and fatally assaulted him.

Confirming the incident, Police spokesperson Sub-Inspector Brima James Musa stated that the motive for the attack remains unknown, but an active investigation has been launched to track down those responsible.
“This is a deeply troubling incident. We are pursuing all leads and will ensure that justice is served,” said Sub-Inspector Musa.

Fr. Amadu was widely known for his gentle spirit, community service, and his strong moral leadership. He spent his years in Kenema advocating for peace, youth empowerment, and justice, and was regarded as a pillar of faith and compassion within the community.
The Catholic Church has expressed deep sorrow, condemning the killing as not only a loss to the Church but to the entire nation. In a statement from the Diocese, the Church called on authorities to act swiftly:

“His life was cut short in such a violent and senseless manner. We cannot remain silent. We demand a full investigation, the arrest of the perpetrators, and increased security for our citizens.”
This shocking incident comes amid rising concerns over the security situation in Sierra Leone. Just days ago, a NASSIT officer was attacked in a separate violent crime, raising public fears about a growing pattern of unchecked violence.

Fr. Amadu’s body has been transferred to the Kenema Government Hospital mortuary, where an autopsy is expected to be conducted. Funeral arrangements will be announced in the coming days.
As the investigation unfolds, the community in Kenema remains united in mourning; grieving not just the death of a priest, but the loss of a peacemaker, counselor, and father figure.
