Child Marriage, Violence Against Women Decline
Bonthe District has recorded a decline in child marriage and violence against women, according to Neneh Angela Fullah, Secretary General of the Bonthe District Women’s Empowerment Group. She praised the government of President Dr. Julius Maada Bio for initiatives that have improved the lives of women in the district.
Madam Fullah highlighted the 30% quota for female participation in governance, noting increased representation of women in decision-making roles. She also commended the appointment of women as Justices of the Peace and female teachers, emphasizing the positive impact on education and community leadership.
She urged the government to expand access to microfinance for women and address ongoing challenges in the health and education sectors, while acknowledging the progress made under President Bio’s administration.
Meanwhile, the Mayor of Bonthe City, Mohamed Robinson, has highlighted significant developments on Bonthe Island since President Dr. Julius Maada Bio assumed office in 2018.
Speaking on ongoing projects, Mayor Robinson noted the construction of a sea-face wall to prevent flooding, extensive road works using interlocking bricks, improvements in water and electricity supply, and the modernization of the city clock tower.
He also cited the Green Public Works project implemented by NaCSA, which has created jobs for youths and persons with disabilities, helping to keep the city green and clean.
