An inferno broke out at the Nyapui School of Excellence for Girls in the early hours of Tuesday, 3rd February 2026, causing panic and significant damage to parts of the school and nearby residences.

According to preliminary information, the fire started in the early night while the pupils were doing prep within the school compound.
The Nyapui School of Excellence for Girls is fully solarised and is not connected to the main Electricity Distribution and Supply Authority (EDSA) power grid, ruling out initial speculation that the blaze was caused by a fault in the national electricity supply.
The blaze extended beyond the school premises, damaging sections of the school facility.

Some of the affected girls sustained injuries during the incident and were rushed to the government hospital in Kenema for medical attention.
Hospital sources confirmed that no fatalities had been recorded at the time of filing this report.

Parents, guardians, and neighbours who intervened swiftly to rescue some of the girls were commended for their prompt action.
However, authorities have directed that all rescued students be returned to the school’s bordering homes to allow for proper accountability, safety assessments, and coordinated support.

The National Fire Force was alerted immediately, and its fire engine arrived at the scene in time to prevent the fire from spreading further and causing more destruction.
Firefighters worked tirelessly to contain the inferno and secure the remaining structures.
The cause of the fire is yet to be officially established, as investigations are ongoing.

Meanwhile, school authorities and local officials have assured parents and the public that measures are being taken to ensure the safety and welfare of all pupils affected by the incident.
More details are expected as investigations progress.
