Editors, Judiciary Pledge Closer Collaboration

A cross section of the Executive of the Guild of Newspaper Editors-Sierra Leone on Tuesday, 9 December, paid a courtesy visit to Chief Justice Komba Kamanda at his Chambers on Siaka Stevens Street in Freetown.

Speaking during the visit, Chairman of the Guild, Thomas Dixon, commended the Chief Justice for ongoing judicial reforms, including the establishment of a court in Mile 91 and the placement of resident judges in several districts. He noted that the decentralization of the Appeals Court to the provinces is a major step in improving access to justice.

Chairman Dixon also raised the issue of the recently introduced Practice Direction, which has generated debate among lawyers. He outlined the Guild’s short- and long-term plans and sought the judiciary’s support, especially in training editors on court processes and judicial reporting.

Chief Justice Kamanda welcomed the Guild and stressed the essential role of the media in promoting good governance and democracy. He noted that journalists must be able to operate freely and without fear. The CJ added that he maintains an open-door policy and is open to constructive criticism that can help improve the judiciary.

The Chief Justice thanked the Guild for acknowledging the reforms underway, including the new court in Mile 91 and the establishment of sexual offences courts in Bo and Kono. He mentioned progress such as the creation of a judicial library after more than 20 years and increased training opportunities for judges and staff.

CJ Komba Kamanda explained that the use of Practice Directions is not new, noting that former Chief Justices used similar directives during national emergencies like Ebola and COVID-19. He said the current directive has already produced positive results and will benefit future generations.

Secretary General of the Guild, Ishmail Saidu Kanu, Esq, thanked the Chief Justice for hosting the Executive and for his assurance of continued openness to the media.
