High Court Judge, Justice Mark Ngegba, has sentenced David Johnson, a motor driver from Deep Eye Water, to 30 years in prison for transporting 89 parcels of cannabis sativa without lawful authority.
Johnson was found guilty on two counts of transporting and possessing prohibited drugs, contrary to the National Drugs Control Act of 2008.
According to the case, Johnson was arrested on 13th May 2025 at the Mile 18 Police Checkpoint in Kambia while driving a red and yellow Nissan vehicle carrying the illegal substances.
The convict admitted to the crime but claimed he was unaware that the parcels contained drugs, saying he was only helping a woman named Jelika Conteh to deliver the package. His lawyer, M.K. Dauda, pleaded for leniency, citing his client’s cooperation and lack of prior knowledge.
In passing judgment, Justice Ngegba acknowledged the plea but stressed that drug trafficking poses a serious threat to public safety and must be punished firmly to deter others. He sentenced Johnson to 25 years on the first count and 5 years on the second, to run concurrently, amounting to a total of 30 years in prison
