Committee for the Consolidation of Criminal Statutes Resumes Sittings

After a three-week recess—granted to allow the Learned Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) and his team of Counsel to address the pivotal question, “Which statutes will be charterised as criminal?”—the Sub-Committee for the Consolidation of Criminal Statutes reconvened yesterday, 9th September 2025, at the conference room of the Law Reform Commission, Special Court Facility, New England, Freetown.

The meeting opened with high commendations for the Learned DPP and his team for their impressive work, which the Committee’s Chairman, Justice Bangura (JSC), described as exemplary. In response, the DPP graciously shared the accolades with J.M. Bockarie, Esq., Principal Legal Counsel at the Law Officers’ Department, whom he recognized as the backbone of the team’s success.

The submission by the DPP and his team, tabled before members yesterday, will now serve as a key reference point as the Committee approaches the final stages of its assignment. Members remain committed to thoroughly reviewing the 16-page document, which captures the essence of the question under consideration, and to presenting recommendations and/or concerns at the Committee’s next sitting.

During the proceedings, the Executive Secretary of the Commission, Ms. Lucy Mae-Seiwoh, provided further guidance on the project requirements and expressed gratitude to the Chairman and members for their commitment and diligence throughout the process.

The Commission also renewed its appreciation to the Government of Sierra Leone and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) for funding and supporting this important work.
