Sixteen coastal communities in Sierra Leone’s Western Area Rural and Urban districts will take part in the inaugural Coastal Unity Boat Race.
The event, organized by the GEED Foundation with support from the Ministry of Tourism and Cultural Affairs, Rokel Commercial Bank, and Africell, is set for 4th and 5th April 2026.
The boat race aims to promote boat riding as a structured tourism activity while nurturing community cohesion, youth engagement, and tourism development.

Fifteen communities have already confirmed participation, including Government Wharf, Kissy Ferry Terminal, Susan’s Bay, Congo Town, Moa Wharf, Tombo, Aberdeen, King Jimmy, Funkia, Levuma, No. 2 River, Lakka, Magazine, Kroo Bay, and Banana Water.
The competition is in line with the Year of Culture and Creativity and will highlight the resilience of coastal communities and the rich tradition of canoe and boat riding.
Prizes include NLe 50,000 for the winning team, NLe 40,000 for the first runner-up, and NLe 30,000 for the second runner-up. Special recognition will also be awarded for the three most creative flags, presented by Minister of Tourism and Cultural Affairs, Nabeela Farida Tunis.
