On 30th March 2026, the Campaign Against Cruelty to Animals in Sierra Leone (CCA- SL) in collaboration with community stakeholders organized a training workshop on basic humane education and animal welfare in Bo City.

The training is in continuation of the organization’s AWI funded Humane Education activities in the Bo and Moyamba Districts respectively. It targeted a total of twenty (20) participants comprising the organization’s volunteers, as well as teachers, religious leaders, the media and school children.
The objective was to provide basic knowledge suitable for schools programs, community engagements and general awareness raising. Participants were taken through the definition and foundation of animal welfare, definition of humane education, its importance and community action required to foster humane education, among others.
Discussions were centered on emerging animal welfare issues including pet eating, animal abuse/ neglect, brutal killings, ritual sacrifices etc in communities.

Recommendations proffered include the practice of responsible animal ownership/care, continued awareness raising, passing of anti-cruelty bylaws, and inclusion of animal welfare education in school curriculum, among others. Also, the creation of a WhatsApp group was strongly recommended as it provides the platform to champion animal welfare/ humane education issues in communities.
