Bio Unveils Modern Burns Unit in Freetown

Julius Maada Bio has inaugurated new diagnostic equipment and a modern burns unit at Connaught Government Hospital, in a move aimed at improving healthcare delivery across the country.

The event, held in Freetown, saw the introduction of advanced CT scan and ultrasound machines, alongside a fully equipped burns unit.

The CT scanners are the first of their kind in the public health sector in Sierra Leone and are expected to significantly strengthen the country’s diagnostic capacity.

Addressing attendees, President Bio said the investment demonstrates his government’s commitment to building a people-focused health system.

He called on medical staff and the public to ensure the proper use and maintenance of the new facilities.

Andrew Sorie, Senior Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Health Sierra Leone, commended the initiative, highlighting the role of international collaboration in advancing healthcare services.

Dr I.M. Kapuwa, Medical Superintendent of Connaught Hospital, expressed appreciation for the continued support to the institution, noting that the new additions will improve patient care.

Deputy Chief Medical Officer Dr Musa Kabba said the project was informed by lessons learned from the Wellington fuel tanker explosion, which revealed weaknesses in emergency response systems.

Minister of Health Austin Demby described the commissioning as a critical step toward improving both diagnostic services and emergency treatment, ultimately enhancing patient outcomes.

The development marks continued progress in efforts to strengthen Sierra Leone’s healthcare system and expand access to quality medical services.
