By Mariama Bundu

President Julius Maada Bio has called for urgent action to link energy access to economic growth, highlighting green industrialisation as key to stability and prosperity in developing countries.

Speaking at a high-level roundtable in Vienna during the International Vienna Energy Forum, President Bio said energy should not only provide access but also drive production, job creation, and improved livelihoods.

He noted that Sierra Leone is aligning energy development with key sectors through initiatives such as Feed Salone, which supports irrigation, agro-processing, and rural businesses.

The President emphasized the importance of renewable energy solutions like mini-grids and stand-alone systems, especially for rural communities, describing them as the fastest way to expand access.

He also highlighted opportunities in green industrialisation, including clean cooking initiatives that are creating jobs and supporting women-led enterprises.

President Bio further pointed to ongoing partnerships aimed at expanding energy access and attracting investment, noting that regional efforts are being strengthened through his role as Chairman of ECOWAS.

He announced plans for a new Distributed Renewable Energy and Clean Cooking Acceleration Initiative to be launched within the next year to scale solar energy use and improve access to clean cooking.

The President concluded by reaffirming Sierra Leone’s commitment to advancing energy solutions that improve livelihoods and support long-term development.
